Lieutenant General Seán Clancy nominated for EU chair

The head of the Irish Defence Forces, Mitchelstown man and Chief of Staff Seán Clancy, is to be nominated by the government for the position of Chair of the European Union Military Committee (EUMC), the highest military body within the EU.

Speaking in the Dáil recently, Tánaiste Micheál Martin said the nomination would demonstrate ‘Ireland’s commitment to the EU’ and particularly so in light of Russia’s continued invasion in Ukraine.

Minister Martin confirmed to Deputy Gary Gannon earlier in March that a number of neutral countries have held the chairmanship over the years, including the current holders Austria. The nomination of Lieutenant General Clancy is the second time that Ireland has nominated a Chair of the EUMC, following the previous unsuccessful nomination of Vice Admiral Mark Mellet.
