With darker evenings and cold mornings setting in, many Cork homeowners are wondering how to stay warm without watching their energy bills spiral.
Local energy-efficiency expert Jason McNamara, managing director of SolasTech Insulation & Ventilation, based in Fermoy, says a few smart upgrades can make all the difference.
“We see so many homes losing up to 30% of their heat through uninsulated walls and attics,” explains Jason. “That’s money being wasted every single day. Good insulation is one of the best investments a homeowner can make.”
1. START WITH INSULATION
Cavity wall and attic insulation are two of the most effective — and affordable — ways to keep your home warm. With SEAI grants available, many Cork households can significantly reduce the cost of upgrading.
“A properly insulated home heats up quicker and holds the heat longer,” Jason says. “You’ll notice the comfort straight away.”
2. DON’T BLOCK YOUR VENTS
It’s tempting to cover air vents in winter, but proper ventilation prevents condensation, damp, and mould. Modern systems, such as demand-controlled ventilation or heat recovery units (MVHR), recover warmth from outgoing air — so you stay comfortable without losing heat.
“Fresh air doesn’t have to mean cold air,” Jason adds.
3. TAKE CONTROL OF YOUR HEATING
Smart thermostats and heating controls can help you use up to 20% less energy. Heating only the rooms you use, and setting timers, ensures you stay warm efficiently.
4. SEAL THOSE DRAUGHTS
Small gaps around doors, windows, and attic hatches can have a big impact. “It’s a simple DIY job that can save you real money,” says Jason.
