Following the recent announcement that 100 jobs are to come on stream at the former FCI factory on the South side of Fermoy by American company, ABEC Inc., there is further good news this week on foot of a planning application to re-develop the former John McCarthy Motors showrooms site.

The company involved is Sofa Properties Ltd which, The Avondhu understands, has connections with ESSO/SPAR and the H2 Group and, should planning be granted, will result in the provision of approximately 50 jobs made up of full time and part time positions.

The plan for the site includes the redevelopment of the existing service station, retail shop and showrooms. This will necessitate the demolition of the existing service & parts workshop, toilets building, service station retail shop, pumps and canopy and will result in the relocation of the existing car wash, the construction of new pumps, canopy and under ground storage tanks, and the change of use of the existing 564sqm car-showroom.

The latter, which has recently been used as a designer clearance outlet, will incorporate a 100sqm retail area and off-licence area, a café/deli/seating area, toilets, staff facilities and store. This will require alterations to the facades, appropriate signage and the provision of a car park along with associated site works.

The development will in some way, mirror the town’s northern approach which is served by two service stations. Petrol was sold on the Cork Road site since just after the war and the proposed development will be seen as another plus for that side of the town. Regarding the planning, submissions will be accepted up until February 26.
