Somewhat bucking the trend at the moment, Fianna Fail Councillor Kevin O'Keeffe, this week took a personal stand on the issue of same sex marriage and told The Avondhu that he doesn't believe that same sex couples should be able to have a family.

Speaking to The Avondhu after he made the controversial statement, which doesn't tally with his own parties stance, at the Cork East constituency meeting, he said that he stands by what he said.

He explained that while he is not against same sex couples or gay relationships, his objection comes in when they would be considering adoption to start their own family.

"It's about the family issue - I feel that family values need to be kept to and that children should be given equal opportunities with a mother and a father," he said.

He added that he's glad Minister Leo Varadkar publicly came out as being gay, but argued that this referendum needs to be considered more deeply, as he said that people are talking about it like it's going to be passed without a hitch, but he doesn't believe that's the case.

"It's not a done and dusted deal - it needs more discussion. I felt I had to take a personal stand on this issue."

Cllr O'Keeffe added that he thinks that more people feel the same way he does, but they don't want to come out publicly and say so.

"There's people afraid to speak out and it's those who speak the loudest who get heard," he concluded.
