Grand Cross of Naval Merit awarded to General Sean Clancy

President of the European Union Military Committee, Sean Clancy who hails from Mitchelstown, has been awarded the Grand Cross of Naval Merit by the Spanish Government through Royal Decree. The Minister of Defence, Margarita Robles Fernandez, granted the distinction ‘by virtue of the merits and outstanding circumstances of the general’.

An awards ceremony was hosted after a meeting of the Council of Ministers on June 9th. The ceremony honoured Spain’s collaboration and recognised individuals who have had a notable impact on the military or on international relations. 

The Grand Cross of Naval Merit is one of the highest honours that the Spanish Ministry of Defence can bestow. Chief of Defence Staff (JEMAD), Admiral General Teodoro López Calderón, awarded General Clancy with the Grand Cross of Naval Merit during his official visit to Spain recently.
