Workshops designed to support primary schools in starting, maintaining, or further developing their school gardens, fostering outdoor learning and environmental awareness among students will take place later this month.
The workshops will take place in October and a variety of topics will be covered to accommodate schools including seed collecting, storing and sowing, water in the garden, up-cycling, greening yards and starting a school garden. Open to all primary schools across Cork, the announcement regarding the Cork School Garden Workshops, was recently made by Muintir na Tire, in partnership with Cork County Council and Cork City Council.
The workshops, including one in Midleton and one online, will be delivered by Aoife Munn, a horticulturist with nearly 20 years of experience working with school gardens. Aoife, brings a wealth of practical, easy to implement ideas tailored for school environments.
Denis Kelly of Muintir na Tíre highlighted the inclusive nature of the initiative.
“We are delighted to welcome the return of the Cork School Garden Workshops in 2026. We saw the benefits from last year’s workshops when visiting schools this year. To make the most of the workshops we encourage participation from across the entire school community, from principals and teachers to SNAs, caretakers, parents, and community members with an interest in supporting and developing their local school garden,” he said.
REGISTRATION NECESSARY
To accommodate the large number of primary schools across the county, four in-person workshops (4pm to 6.30pm) and one online session (4pm to 5.30pm) will be held in October.Registration is essential and schools are invited to book whichever workshop best suits their location and schedule.
The dates and locations are as follows: Monday, 5th October – Gaelscoil na Duglaise; Tuesday, 6th October – Timoleague NS; Wednesday, 7th October – Ballyhass NS; Thursday, 8th October – St John the Baptist in Midleton; and on Monday, 12th October, an online workshop
