The new series of TG4’s ‘Geantraí’ kicks off this Sunday evening at 10.30pm, where a session recorded in Ó Céilleachair’s bar (Kelleher’s) in Kilfinane will feature music from Claire O’Loughlin, Ciara Flanagan, María Ryan, Lucia McPartlin, Anita Bennis, Donie Nolan, Macdara Ó Faoláin, Seán Ó Fearghaíl, Derek Hickey and Liam Flanagan.
Over the next thirteen weeks, ‘Geantraí’ will feature music sessions from across the country, including in Jim of the Mills in Upperchurch, Tipperary, Tigh Uí Mhaonaigh (Mooney’s) in Ring in Waterford and from Monk’s Lane in Timoleague, West Cork.
The traditional music series served as a cornerstone in TG4’s music programming for 17 years from 1996 until 2013, with this series marking a comeback for the show.
This new thirteen-part series sees singer and musician Ciarán Ó Gealbháin take the helm as series presenter, where he travels the length and breadth of the country to celebrate Ireland’s vibrant music session tradition.
Mr Ó Gealbháin is a highly acclaimed singer and musician from An Sean Phobal in the Déise Gaeltacht of Co. Waterford. Having toured extensively with the band Danú and performed and recorded with artists such as Liam Clancy and The Chieftains, Ciarán continues to perform at festivals and concerts across the world and at home, while he also serves as a lecturer in Béaloideas (Folklore) in UCC.
The new series began at Christmastime with a re-showing of last year’s Geantraí na Nollag, which featured North Cregg, The Whileaways, Frankie Gavin and Conor Connolly, Sorcha Costello and Elaine Reilly and Gary Ó Briain.
