Cork GAA’s second annual Community Clean Up Day gets underway this Saturday, April 12th with clubs from across the city and county registered to take part.

Members of hurling, football, camogie and ladies football clubs will don their jerseys and gather to pick up litter in their local community. Last year’s inaugural event resulted in each participating club collecting 12 to 15 bags of rubbish made up of drink cups, wrappers, packaging, plastic bottles, cigarette butts and some green waste.

There will be a large number of children taking part and Cork GAA is calling on motorists to be mindful of groups on public roads, particularly between the hours of 10am and 2pm.

Each participating club will be provided with equipment such as litter pickers, gloves, bags and hi-vis vests. Panda is the official recycling partner of SuperValu Páirc Uí Chaoimh and is the Clean Up Day recycling partner for the Cork City area. KWD Recycling, Country Clean Recycling and Wiser Recycling will be collecting in the county.

‘SUSTAINABILITY VISION’

Enda Buckley, Chair of Cork GAA Sustainability Committee said: “We wanted this year’s Community Clean Up Day to coincide with the National Spring Clean initiative and we have received a positive reaction from clubs around Cork. The event is part of Cork GAA’s Sustainability Vision and aims to foster a cleaner, healthier environment for everyone to enjoy and we hope to see young and old coming out in support of the initiative this Saturday.”

Cork GAA is the first County Board in the country to undertake such an initiative on this scale and is supported by An Taisce, Tidy Towns and Cork City and County Councils.
