Final services at Mount Melleray before monks depart

Sunday last saw hundreds making their way to the revered Mount Melleray Abbey in west Waterford to attend some of the final services held, before the Cistercian Monks vacate the site for Roscrea.

Numerous vehicles lined the roadside as people made their way to the final Sunday Mass – many having trod the same path regularly down the years – before the monks’ much lamented imminent departure. It is understood that due to the large crowds in attendance, that final confessions extended over several hours.

Cllr Damien Geoghegan, a representative of the Dungarvan Lismore District, along with his wife, Natanya, were among those to visit the abbey on Sunday as locals and those with a connection to the renowned site from further afield, came to bid adieu to the Cistercian community.
