Farmers know a thing or two about protesting – normal protesting. More than farmers depend on marked (green) diesel to keep going and it was this significant group of ‘others’ who primarily led last week’s protest against spiralling fuel prices.

For a campaign without leaders or leadership, it was surprisingly effective. Organised with the help of social media and capitalising on the close networks that exist between those working in the green diesel sector, these protests must go down as a success in terms of impact and results. The decision, by individuals unknown, to target what we now know to be very vulnerable fuel storage depots and oil refining facilities was controversial, but game changing. It takes very little to spook the public and a combination of panic buying and the paralysing of Ireland’s vehicular transport system brought matters to a head very, very quickly.
