An exhibition, facilitated through art sessions with Kilworth based artist Gillian Cussen and Inge Van Doorslaer, launches during World Alzheimer’s Month.
The exhibition showcases artwork created by members of Cork’s Cuimhne Group through a unique partnership between The Alzheimer Society of Ireland and Crawford Art Gallery.
Outreach artist facilitators, Cussen and Van Doorslaer, have been working on the Lonradh programme since 2012 with people with memory loss and their significant others. They have been working with Cuimhne, a Cork-based group for people living with young-onset dementia and their significant others group, for two years on a monthly basis.
“Anyone arriving into the art sessions is welcomed, included and invited to experience art in a relaxed, informal and often humerous way. For us it has always been a reciprocal experience of connection, sharing and learning,” Gillian and Inge said.
‘A LITTLE PIECE OF MAGIC’
The Alzheimer Society of Ireland (The ASI), Crawford Art Gallery and Cork City Libraries are inviting the public to view a selection of artwork created by members of the Cuimhne Group.
‘A Little Piece of Magic’, the exhibition, will be officially opened at 11am on Wednesday, 2nd September at Cork City Library. The launch will be followed by a public talk on brain health delivered by two of ASI’s dementia advisers. Artwork will then remain on display throughout September as part of World Alzheimer’s Month.
Established by The ASI in Cork in 2023, the Cuimhne Group was created in response to growing interest from people living with young-onset dementia, etc to connect in a supportive social environment outside traditional clinical settings. What began as a monthly coffee gathering has grown into a vibrant community built on friendship and peer support, with members taking part in artistic workshops, social events and cultural outings.
