Cork County Council is investigating the dumping of domestic refuse at Kilcrumper New Cemetery and has plans to provide segregated bays to allow visitors to the cemetery to properly dispose of grass, flowers, wreaths and other associated items from the graveside of loved one in a respectable and organised manner.
At present, the area of the cemetery to the left of the entrance has been turned into a waste ground of soil, mounds of cut grass, flowers and wreaths as well as domestic refuse.
The condition of the cemetery is a concern to many visitors, according to local councillor Noel McCarthy, who said the presence of so much waste in a cemetery should be quickly rectified.
Senior engineer with Fermoy Municipal Authority Brendan O’Gorman, told The Avondhu that the dumping of domestic refuse is currently being investigated by the council’s Anti-Litter Unit.
He added: “We have plans to provide segregated bays fronted with screening fencing so that at least the excavated soil is not mixed with flowers/wreathes etc., and is out of public view. This will be in place during fourth quarter of this year.”
He said CCTV cameras would not be appropriate as the cemetery is a sensitive location, and that no bins would be provided as ‘this will increase the risk of dumping of domestic refuse’.
Cllr McCarthy welcomed the action taken by the council on this matter, as he said locals have contacted him with concerns about the appearance of the cemetery.
