Cork people with Asthma and COPD not using Valuable Free Adviceline Service

The Asthma Society of Ireland are calling on people with asthma in Cork to use their free Asthma and COPD Adviceline to help them to better manage their asthma and/or COPD.

Speaking about Cork’s calls to the free Adviceline service, CEO of the Asthma Society, Sarah O’Connor, said: “39,965 people in Cork have asthma, while 59,715 have COPD. Only two calls from Cork were recorded to the Adviceline in August.

“We want people in Cork to know about the free Adviceline service and to use the service so that we can help people with asthma and/or COPD feel well, keep their asthma under control, and live full lives, symptom-free.”

“The free Adviceline is proven to have a truly positive impact on people with asthma and COPD. The appointments are really tailored to the needs of the caller. Our asthma specialist nurses work through every aspect of life with asthma: what to do in the event of an asthma attack, answering questions after a GP or consultant appointment, dealing with triggers that may be causing asthma to escalate, and helping you put together an Asthma Action Plan to self-manage your condition. After speaking to one of our nurses, you’ll be fully equipped with the information and skills you need to improve your health.”

“Run in conjunction with the HSE, the free Asthma Adviceline has provided excellent outcomes for those who use it, reducing the time missed from school or work, and putting people in the driving seat with their asthma.

“In 2017, a partnership survey undertaken with the HSE showed that 70% of people under 50 who used the Adviceline found it reduced the numbers of days they missed from school or work as a result of their condition and nearly 80% of people who called felt more confident in managing their condition after speaking to our nurses.”

The free Asthma and COPD Adviceline is available on 1800 44 54 64.

Callers can book an appointment by calling the free phone number between 09:00 and 17:00 Monday to Friday.

A call-back appointment with an experienced specialist respiratory nurse specialist will be scheduled for a time and day that suits the caller.

In 2019, the Asthma Society of Ireland’s Asthma Adviceline was awarded an independent quality mark by the Helplines Partnership, one of only three helplines in Ireland to have achieved this standard.
