The annual Mass at Aglish Cemetery in Doneraile took place last Monday. Postponed because of bad weather a couple of weeks ago, the evening held up reasonably well.

Situated off the Kildorrery/Doneraile road, Aglish (pronounced ‘Oglish’), is an ancient burial site within the parish boundary of Doneraile.

Being a little off the beaten track, it could very easily have become a forgotten location and according to some, if it wasn’t for the intervention of local man John Daly, this could have become the case.

40 years ago this year, John stepped forward, when there weren’t many takers for the role of caretaker/registrar. Again, according to informed sources, the cemetery was in an overgrown state, with many of the headstones completely covered.
