For their outstanding project commemorating the Kent Family and local volunteers who fought for Irish freedom in the 1916 and the tumultuous years that followed, the villages of Castlelyons/Bridesbridge have been honoured and recognised as the Pride of County Cork for 2016.

With a combined population of just over 800 people, the local Tidy Towns and Heritage groups also secured the Best Small Village Project Award in the Muintir Na Tire organised event.

Communities across the county participated in the 2016 Pride in our Community competition, and representatives converged from all corners of the county to attend the awards ceremony last week in Oriel House Hotel in Ballincollig.

Castlelyons/Bridesbridge Tidy Towns and Heritage Group’s project impressed the judges to take two awards on the night, including the overall award.

The project revolved around a memorial in Fr Ferris Park, unveiled last May to mark the 100th anniversary of the gunfight at Bawnard House and the subsequent execution of Thomas Kent.
