Archbishop Michael Francis Crotty, titular of Lindisfarne and a native of Ballygiblin, Mitchelstown, was this week appointed apostolic nuncio in Nigeria; he formerly held the position of apostolic nuncio in Burkina Faso and Niger. In Church terminology, a nuncio is Vatican representative seen as an ambassador to a civil government, that keeps diplomatic relations with the Holy See.
The announcement was made by the Vatican on Tuesday this week. The archbishop was born locally in March 1970 and attended Ballygiblin National School and later CBS in Mitchelstown. The Most Reverend Crotty studied for the priesthood at St PAtrick’s College, Maynooth and was ordained a priest in July 1994. Entering diplomatic service with the Vatican in July 2001, Most Rev Crotty has worked in Kenya, Canada, Iraq, Jordan and in Spain, and is fluent in Irish, English, French, German, Italian and Spanish.
His predecessor, Antonio Guido Filipazzi, was appointed Apostolic Nuncio to Poland last August.
