Former dog breeder Anne Broderick, operating out of a premises at The Hermitage, Ballyandrew in Doneraile, has failed in her appeal against a closure order made by Cork County Council in January this year.

Ms Broderick had been ordered to cease operating by the council in a letter issued on 3rd January, but appealed the decision. The closure order was made on foot of a number of visits to the puppy farm, where about 240 dogs were found, some in filthy conditions and lacking water, bedding or heat. The council had, since the closure order was issued, removed dogs worth €80,000 from the business.

Although Ms Broderick disputed some of the claims, the matter was concluded in a case in Mallow District Court where on Wednesday last week, Judge Colm Roberts dismissed the appeal. She was ordered to pay the council costs of €5,000.

As of this week, there are nine registered dog breeding establishments in the county of Cork, with one each located in the towns of Fermoy, Mitchelstown and Mallow.
