The recently established Kilbehenny Community Alert Group has been met with a warm welcome and so far 130 people have signed up.

Chairperson of the group Moss Fitzgerald, explained that the text service is live and people shouldn’t be afraid to use it.

At a recent meeting in the community centre, Garda Vincent Guerin told people to ring the Garda station if they see something suspicious and not to presume that someone else will make that call.

On the night, people were also given tips and hints on keeping safe and were advised to lock all windows and doors and also to leave lights on or put lights on timers when they are leaving; use an alarm even when you are in the house and store keys away from windows and letter boxes.

Gardai advised against keeping large amounts of cash or jewellery in the home, while outdoor sheds, oil tanks, machinery and tools should all be secured.

In case there is a theft, it is advisable to photograph tools and machinery and to take note …
