Hundreds attend Bessborough commemoration amid ongoing planning dispute

Kilbehenny woman Michelle Roche, pictured on the right, stood alongside Carmel Cantwell (centre) and Joy Kelly O'Regan, by gifts and artwork laid out to commemorate the death of 923 children and babies at the Bessborough Mother and Baby Home.

Around 250 people were in attendance during the annual Bessborough Commemoration held last Sunday, June 28th, as survivors and supporters alike renewed calls for the previous mother and baby home site to be properly represented. 

The gathering took place against the backdrop of an ongoing appeal, after Cork City Council granted permission back in February for apartments on part of the Bessborough site in Blackrock. 

There was a clear emphasis around the future of the land and the need for those that have suffered to be heard. Survivors and supporters are understood to have said they would be willing to chain themselves to diggers if development proceeds without a resolution.
