
For most people, Lake Windermere in England is a place for leisurely activities such as boat trips or strolls along the shore, but for others, the lake serves as a test of true endurance swimming. Fermoy native Owen O’Keefe has now conquered the lake, twice, as he successfully swam a total distance of 34km, on August 11th, his longest swim in fresh water to date, helping to raise over €2,500 for MS Ireland in the process.
Windermere Lake in Cumbria is widely regarded as one of the best places to go wild swimming in the United Kingdom, with people regularly swimming there throughout the summer months. 1 mile wide and over 10 miles long, with the water reaching 219 feet at its deepest, it makes for a challenging test for endurance swimmers.
Speaking to The Avondhu this week, the former St. Colman’s student said that the lake was always on his radar and was happy to finally complete the fete.
