‘Are we being industrialised?’ – residents raise serious concerns over energy projects

Residents of Leamlara in East Cork are voicing serious concerns following An Coimisiún Pleanála’s (ACP) decision to grant planning permission for a 220kV electricity substation in the area.

The substation is linked to the proposed 450-acre Ballysallagh Solar Farm, raising fears about the cumulative impact of large-scale energy infrastructure on rural communities.

“What’s most alarming is the clustering of development,” one resident said. “With a 220kV substation now approved in Leamlara, a 220kV substation already in Knockraha (5km away), another in Lysaghtstown (6km away), and a fourth substation seeking planning in Knockraha East, we’re surrounded. Is this part of a broader strategy? Are we being quietly industrialised without oversight?” the resident asked.
