From slick-back buns to dry shampoo hacks, new research uncovers how Irish women manage bad hair days, who they turn to for inspiration, and which past hair choices they wish they could undo.

Two-thirds (67%) of Irish women wash their hair 2-3 times per week, with 22% stretching to once a week and only 9% braving a daily wash. This high frequency of hair washes per week is highest among the Gen Z cohort, with 81% washing their hair multiple times per week.

BAD HAIR DAYS

Bad hair days still plague many – and everyone handles them differently. The most popular disguise? The classic slick-back bun, used by 39% of women to tame their mane. This increases to more than one in two (56%) of Gen Z opting for a slick back bun on a bad hair day. A third (34%) opt for dry shampoo, while 6% go as far as keeping their camera off during video calls, and 16% admit they have no solution.

INSPIRATION

When it comes to hair heroes, the generations are divided. More than 1 in 3 (36%) of Gen Z women look to Sabrina Carpenter for inspiration, embracing her effortless bouncy blow-dry glam and glossy finishes. Meanwhile, 15% of Gen X hail Taylor Swift’s fringe as their iconic look.

DISASTERS

Hair regrets are real – but many are proud of their journey. 37% of Irish women say they have no hair regrets at all. For the rest, the top regrets include: Bleaching blunders; Trusting an untrained friend with scissors; Overusing hot tools; and DIY fringe attempts.

Yet when it all goes right, the rewards are more than just aesthetic. Half (54%) of Irish women say they feel most confident on a good hair day, while 44% of baby boomers say they feel most like themselves when their hair is just right.

The nationwide study of 1,000 Irish people was undertaken by Perfectil.
