This coming Saturday, May 24, Mitchelstown Lion's Club is joining forces with Diabetes Ireland to offer people in Mitchelstown free diabetes screening and an information morning on the condition. The screening and information morning will take place Saturday morning in the Clongibbon House, New Square, Mitchelstown from 10am until 2pm and all are welcome.
A simple blood test can determine whether or not people have diabetes, the test takes about five seconds with immediate results. As you do not need to fast, this is a great opportunity to check if diabetes is something that affects you.
In Ireland, 200,000 people have been diagnosed with diabetes, while the same number of people are likely to have diabetes, but have not yet been diagnosed.
Type 1 diabetes generally occurs among people under the age of 35, while Type 2 is more common and usually affects those over the age of 40. In Ireland, 2,500 children and teenagers have Type 1 diabetes and this figure is expected to rise because of the high rates of obesity among young people.
To raise funds, Diabetes Ireland also have a 'It Makes Cents' campaign, asking people to donate 1c and 2c coins for research into Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes, with the premise that small change can make a big difference. E-mail info@diabetes.ie or visit www.diabetes.ie for more information.
All are welcome to Saturday morning's event.
