Correspondence from the region’s Assistant Garda Commissioner has done nothing to allay fears that Fermoy Garda station could lose its divisional status.
Concern had been raised by councillors of the Northern Committee who had written to the southern region’s Garda chief amid unconfirmed reports that the Cork North Garda Division was being relocated from Fermoy to a new headquarters in Cobh.
Cllr Noel McCarthy said that if the rumours were true, the downgrading of Fermoy would have serious implications for the town whose specialised units provide a major deterrent to crime in the town.
