In 1957, '58 and '59, boys from the Market district and Cork Road are used to play hurling in the market field where the old Fermoy Mart premises was later built in the 1960s.

I remember one of the first games between a market team and Pat Dermody's Cork Road U11 team in which Pat threw a good deal of angry 'Shi-ites', after the match especially because, believe it or not, we won 10 nil. Foul language from Cork Road seemed to be part and parcel of proceedings - they got so frustrated after every match - we were amused and they brought many a broad smile to our faces. Our captain Tomas Murphy would hurl five of them!

The teams were made up of the following: The Market - Tomas Murphy (captain) from Fitzgerald Place, Ciaran O'Connor (bakery), Anton Walsh, Patrick Street; Tomas Crotty, Patrick Street; John O'Grady, Kent Street; Michael Lyons, Fitzgerald Place; Noel McAuliffe, Patrick Street; Tom McAuliffe, Patrick Street; Dermot Kelly, Patrick Street; Terry Doyle (Sgt Larry Doyle's son) and Michael Foley, Liseux Villas.

Cork Road - Pat Dermody, MacCurtain Street (captain); James Byrne, Parnell Place; Arthur (Forty) Mahoney, Emmett Street; Tom Cannon, Devlin Street; Philip Fitzpatrick, Cork Road; Finbar Holland, Cork Road; Frankie Harty, Redmond Street; Liam Fenton, MacCurtain Street; Noelie Hickey, MacCurtain Street; Tony Lillis, Clancy Street; Brian Allman, Emmett Street; Pat Cody, St Mary's; Raymond O'Shea, St Mary's; John Cody, St Mary's and Jim McCormack, St Mary's.

BALLYTRASNA CROSS

In 1959, my Dad brought a team of U.S. to Ballytrasna Cross on the Conna/Castlelyons border, to play a Ballytrasna selection. The Fermoy U13 team was made up of 'Topsy' Murphy (captain), 'Forty' Mahoney, Michael Foley, Tom Cannon, Tom McAuliffe, Noel McAuliffe, John A Ahern, Terry Doyle, Tomas Crotty and Philip Fitzpatrick. The country team lined out with the following: William Clancy (captain); Noel Clancy and Seanie Clancy (all Ballytrasna); Matt Hegarty, Christy Murphy and Moss Murphy (all Coolagown), Joseph Morrisson and Anthony Morrisson (both Ballyclough); Bertie Cronin, Ballytrasna and Cal McCarthy, Coole.

The Ballytrasna lads over-ran us, they beat us by ten goals to no score. Needless to say, we were saddened by this result.

INTERESTING

Really it is interesting to note that Oliver Plunkett Hill didn't ask us for a game! They were athletic. Did they have hurleys? For one reason or another, we didn't have a lot of contact with them. Perhaps because they had their own school and all - at Bridget Street (off Oliver Plunkett Hill).

We were 'hurling crazy, hurling mad, and the hurling it had taken away the little bit of sense we had'! "Yester-me, yester-you, yester-day!"
