Limerick City and County Council will host the county’s National Day of Commemoration Ceremony on Sunday, 12th July, to honour all Irish men and women who died in past wars or on service with the United Nations and other international organisations in the service of peace.
The ceremony, which will take place at 11am on the grounds of the Council Buildings at Merchant’s Quay, marks the fourteenth year that Limerick City and County Council has hosted the event.
Príomh Chomhairleoir of Limerick City and County Council, Councillor Tom Ruddle, will lay a wreath in memory of those who lost their lives in service.
The ceremony will include the raising of the National Flag and the observance of a minute’s silence. A guard of honour will be provided by the 12th Infantry Battalion, Sarsfield Barracks, Limerick.
Members of the public are invited to attend the ceremony, which will provide an opportunity for reflection and remembrance.
Music will be provided by Limerick based choir ‘The Curraghgower Singers’ under the direction of choir master, Mr. Timothy Schinnick, along with bugler, Don Phelan, uilleann piper, Colleen Shanks and drummer, Alberto De Blas.
Representatives of the Roman Catholic Church, Church of Ireland, the Quakers and the Jewish Community will lead the ceremony of prayers and readings.
Similar ceremonies will take place throughout Ireland as part of the annual National Day of Commemoration programme.
Mayor of Limerick, John Moran will represent the people of Limerick at the National Day of Commemoration ceremony at the Royal Hospital Kilmainham in Dublin.
LIMITIED SEATING
Those planning to attend the Limerick ceremony are advised to arrive at least 15 minutes before the 11am ceremony begins, as seating will be limited.
It should be noted that the area around Merchant’s Quay continues to be affected by works associated with the King’s Island Flood Relief Scheme, which may result in reduced parking availability and restricted access to some areas. Attendees are asked to allow extra time for their journey, observe all traffic management signage and follow directions from stewards on the day.
