The J1 program is a right-of-passage experience for many Irish youth, open to anyone over the age of 18, of any nationality, studying at a third-level college across Ireland and Northern Ireland. Speaking on the right-of-passage program, a spokesperson from the Department of Foreign Affairs said, “The J1 visa program is hugely valuable in further developing and enhancing Ireland’s strong relations with the United States. Demand for visas was strong again last year, with the program providing thousands of Irish people the opportunity to work and travel across the United States. This program sustains and promotes Ireland’s strong people-to-people, cultural, and economic ties with the United States, and we anticipate continued high levels of interest for the upcoming J1 season.”
