William Lonergan has been chosen as grand marshal for this year’s St. Patrick’s Day parade in Fermoy. This was formally announced at a function held in Lombard’s Bar, Fermoy last Thursday night.
Here, family and friends gathered for what was a very enjoyable occasion. Born and reared in Fermoy and still active in a range of organisations, William is a universally popular choice for this honourary position.
Speaking at the event, secretary of the Fermoy St. Patrick’s Day Committee, Donal O’Lochlainn, detailed William’s early career working in Maye’s of MacCurtain Street, Keary’s of Kent Street and Cavanagh’s of Ashe Quay. He spent a short time in London, before returning to Fermoy where he took up the position of branch manager of Fermoy’s social welfare office. He retired in 2005.
