‘Particularly complex’ Mitchelstown WWTP upgrade still at stage 1

Mitchelstown Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) remains at ‘Stage 1’ of the upgrade process and is envisaged to be a ‘particularly complex’ project to progress, Uisce Éireann has said.

The project is currently at Stage 1 Strategic Assessment, and typically, wastewater treatment plants take 5 to 7 years to progress through all the stages. A query  to Uisce Éireann by local councillor, Deirdre O’Brien, at a recent closed meeting between elected members and the utility company, sought a detailed update and timeframe on the upgrade of the WWTP locally, which has resulted in badly needed development in Mitchelstown being held up for years.

Cllr O’Brien says it’s concerning that Uisce Éireann has only progressed to stage 1 since 2020, with the full delivery timeline projected at 5–7 years minimum. Moreso, as housing and development in the town is ‘effectively stalled’ without wastewater capacity.
