The communities of Ballyporeen and Clogheen are fighting back, against the planned redeployment of their local Gardaí out of the South Tipperary villages to Cahir and Cashel.
The announcement that the two villages would lose their local Gardaí was made at the start of the month by Chief Superintendent Denis Whelan. The villages will instead have designated community hours.
At the time of the announcement, the Chief Superintendent, District Officer for Cahir, reassured members of Ballyporeen and Clogheen that in practice, the move would not affect their policing service as the two Gardai were “in effect, being pulled into Cahir and Cashel, maybe 70 or 80% of the time.”
