Due to the capacity attendance, it was difficult to get close to the stage, however, from the safety of the greenroom and, following a series of interviews, it seemed clear enough that this 'viral phenomenon' is a well established practice of miming to a recorded backing track.
Perhaps, it's a bit more sophisticated than that, but that was this layman's interpretation.
