Top of the folk tree

During the 1960s and 1970s while The Clancy Brothers were taking America and other parts of the world by storm and while The Dubliners, The Chieftains, The Wolfe Tones and The Bothy Band were on the crest of a wave here at home, individual folk singers such as Johnny McEvoy and Danny Doyle were two of the country’s biggest attractions.

This came about by virtue of songs like ‘Mursheen Durkin’ and ‘The Boston Burglar’ from the former and ‘Whiskey On A Sunday’ and ‘A Daisy A Day’ recorded by the latter. Danny Doyle recorded all of 25 albums but will be forever remembered for the two songs mentioned above.

While we no longer have Danny Doyle with us (he passed away in 2019), his counterpart is still going strong and is currently tuning up for a nationwide tour with the local concert stop scheduled for the Palace Theatre Fermoy on Saturday, October 14.

Now in his late 70s but singing as well as ever, Johnny McEvoy is very much looking forward to his Fermoy gig. “I have great memories of playing The Village Arts Centre in nearby Kilworth over many years and am looking forward to meeting some old friends from that time and hopefully make some new ones,” Johnny said.

Saturday, October 14th will be ‘an evening of nostalgia with Johnny McEvoy’. Tickets on sale from the theatre box office at Fermoy Community Youth Centre (025-32042), from The Avondhu offices in Fermoy (025-32227) and Mitchelstown (025-24451), from Cotter’s Bar, Kilworth or you can call or text 087-6492514.
