Tipp gardaí seize €75,000 of cannabis herb

Gardaí have seized cannabis herb valued at €75,000 and arrested a man in his 30s following a search operation in Cashel, Co. Tipperary on Monday of this week.

Personnel attached to the Tipperary Divisional Drugs Unit, with assistance from the Armed Support Unit, stopped and searched a vehicle at approximately 10pm on Monday evening. Gardaí say that almost four kilograms of cannabis, estimated to be worth €75,000 was seized.

Further searches led to the seizure of €1,400 in cash as well as a number of mobile and electronic devices.

CITIZENS ASSEMBLY

Meanwhile, the Citizens Assembly on Drugs Use has received almost 400 submissions to date. In June the Labour Party made its submission, where the party called for the decriminalisation of drug users, and the legalisation of cannabis for both medicinal and recreational use.

While acknowledging a link between mental health issues and cannabis use, the party stated that it noted the widespread legalisation of cannabis for recreational and medicinal use in many US states, and other countries.
“We also acknowledge the increasing support among the general public and the relevant professional communities in favour of legalisation. Dependency on and abuse of drugs, including cannabis, is a medical issue and not a criminal one.”

A Red C poll conducted by The Business Post in February 2023 found that 54% supported the legalisation of cannabis for recreational use, and 70% of the population supported the decriminalisation of drugs that are currently illegal for medical or therapeutic use.
