Following on from the recent clean up of the River Blackwater from Mallow to Killavullen, a second clean up between Killavullen and Fermoy is being planned for early next year. Over 240kgs of waste was removed from the river at the start of November, in a job initiated by the Environment Directorate of Cork County Council.
The voluntary clean up was done in conjunction with a number of agencies, namely the Civil Defence, Mallow Search & Rescue, Mallow Trout Anglers Association and Avondhu Blackwater Partnership.
The Irish Farmers’ Association facilitated access to landing sites to enable the waste collected by the boat crews to be removed during the course of the operation. The waste was then treated free of charge by Munster Waste in Mallow.
Commenting on the clean up, the Head of Waste Enforcement with Cork County Council Nicholas Bond said: “This successful operation shows what can be achieved by partnerships between the local authority and community/voluntary groups when like-minded people combine their efforts to achieve their common goal. It is anticipated that a similar clean up will be organised for the stretch of the Blackwater between Killavullen and Fermoy in 2015 when weather conditions permit.”
Cllr Frank O’Flynn, whose motion called for a similar operation in the Fermoy area, praised those who were involved in the clean up which he described as very successful. He added that, from talking to people in Fermoy, including those involved with Blackwater Search & Rescue Unit, they would be happy to get involved in the project in the 2015.
Cllr Noel McCarthy too welcomed the clean up from Killavullen to Fermoy and called for the public to name and shame anyone they see dumping. "Bringing them to court is the only way people will learn, it’s totally unacceptable," he said.
Cllr Kay Dawson conceded there is a dumping problem in the area, and said it was shocking that people would consider dumping their rubbish into a river. Cllr June Murphy added her congratulations to all involved in the clean up, noting the good level of co-operation between all groups.
