“A garden for all seasons” was how green-fingered Garda, Pat Moroney described his award winning garden, having been secretly entered in the Killavullen Gardens’ Competition by his wife Nora. One of 60 entries in the popular competition, Pat was stationed in Kildorrery for the past 11 years, having previously served as sergeant in Mallow, Newcastle West and Donegal. Pat claimed the overall prize in the ‘complete garden section’. However, his wife had one slight criticism, saying he was “not a man for pulling weeds”.

Following an emergency motion brought by chairman of Fermoy UDC, Cllr Michael Hanley, the old handball alley, located at the rear of Patrick Street, was to be closed up. There was evidence of gross littering and serious concerns on the danger the structure presented, with some youngsters climbing onto high roofs on Patrick Street via the alley. Cllr John Guinevan described it as a “health hazard”, while Cllr Aileen Pyne said there were problems sorting out the actual owner. Town clerk, Michael Cremin, said that the UDC would act under the 1964 Sanitary Services Act, which covered dangerous places.

While Mitchelstown was eagerly anticipating the upcoming 4-day International Deer Festival, the anticipation of a threatened strike at the Galtee processing plant was foremost in the minds of many locals. With several high profile personalities expected in the town for the festival, including Olympic athlete Ian Wiley and Minister for Agriculture and Food, Joe Walsh, the positivity from the festival was being negated by the uncertainty hanging over strike action at the Galtee plant at Cahir Hill.

Tallow father and son, Michael and John McCarthy, proudly displayed their model car collection to The Avondhu, consisting of some 70 plus originals. While only a hobby for the Chapel Street residents, such cars were fetching nice money when sold. Son John, a student at Lismore CBS, hoped to be a stone cutter when he finished school and told us “I’d never sell them, no matter what I’m offered”. The question is, does he still have the collection today?

Archaeologists were trying to unearth remains of an important period in history at two sites at Conna and Curraglass. Looking to locate dwellings from Sir Walter Raleigh’s failed colony of the 1500s, project manager Eric Klingelhofer from Mercier University USA and his team of approximately 14, were in full ‘dig’ mode when The Avondhu caught up with progress at landowner, Pat Higgins’ field in Curraglass. Working from old maps, they were looking to locate dwellings, and had successfully uncovered some cobbled areas as well as remnants of drains. Soon to open another site north of Conna Castle, they were being assisted in the dig by a local archaeologist from UCC, Rathcormac man Eamon Cotter and Dublin based Frank Myles.

Due to the warm spell being experienced, as well as a lack of imported cannabis, Gardai were conducting searches in the area for cannabis plants. Anxious to prevent any possible home-grown cultivation of the plant, the assistance of the public was also being sought, as the plant could be easily grown in sunny spots within isolated areas. The use of ‘magic mushrooms’ was also on the Garda radar, as they appeared at this time of year.

Fermoy were crowned North Cork U14 A football champions, defeating local rivals and neighbours, Kilworth on a scoreline of Fermoy 4-5 Kilworth 2-3. Leading at half-time by a single point, an early second half Kilworth goal from a penalty saw them take the lead. However fine displays from E Fenton, J McCarthy, P Hickey, A Kerin and L Mannix, saw them lift the title.
