There was general welcome this week for the news that Eirgrid had extended the deadline for submissions on its Grid Link Project. The deadline which was due to expire on Tuesday has been pushed back until 5pm on January 7, 2014.

This is seen as the first step in creating a more meaningful and effective engagement with the public and proves that it is worth fighting to ensure the beauty of our countryside is not pillaged by these monstrosities.

It is obvious that the project will go ahead and if we are to accept that, the call to have the lines put underground is surely the most sensible solution.

Several communities within The Avondhu readership area are going to be the ones to bear the brunt of this project. More the reason then, that the call from community leaders for the momentum to be maintained through personal lobbying and continued participation at local meetings, be positively responded to.
