October and November are popular months with schools to host their open nights. Blackwater Community School (BCS) in Lismore opted for Monday evening, November 24th and between the hours of 6.30pm and 9pm, several hundred parents and prospective students made a point of visiting the school, where Denis Ring is principal.

Tour leaders (BCS students) gave their group the lowdown on what the school has to offer in terms of subjects and facilities and they dealt ably with queries that ranged from locker arrangements, to the school's successful book rental scheme.

Parents seemed particularly interested in subject choices and in this regard, teacher Sarah Jane Mulcahy made a very informative presentation. Among the range of subjects pupils can choose are: art, technical graphics, home economics, wood work, metalwork and music.

The school also benefits from colour co-ordinated corridors and a one-way system of movement - slightly complicated at first listening, we were assured the system runs like clockwork.

The sporty types are well catered for in Blackwater Community School and Mr. Ring's passion for field sports is reflected in the wide range of pursuits available to students. Facilities are excellent and include a full size playing field, spacious astro turf and the multi purpose John Treacy Hall - where Mr. Ring gave his address. Students were also to the fore in detailing their experiences - these accounts were frank, measured and honest and painted a picture where students were at the centre of the educational process.

Tea and coffee was served by members of the parents' assocation and we were also treated to a recital by the school choir.

In summary, Blackwater Community School remains committed to providing its young people with a very thorough and rounded education in modern, comfortable surroundings. Entrance assessments take place on Saturday, 31st January 2015. Anyone wishing to know more about BCS is welcome to contact 058-53620 or alternatively, log on to www.blackwatercs.com
