Poplar trees cause for concern for Mitchelstown homeowners

Mitchelstown residents on the Cloonlough road are calling on Cork County Council to tackle the management of approximately 30 poplar trees behind their homes, trees that almost seven years ago the council committed to maintaining.

The trees are, according to homeowners Martin Lane and Tom O’Brien, blocking light and are posing a safety hazard. Technically the trees border the Ailsbury Court estate, but are just behind the fences of homes on the Cloonlough Road.

Recently, a branch of significant size broke from one of the trees and landed against Mr Lane’s house, after a night in which he could hear loud cracking from the trees.

The Avondhu met with the men at their homes on Monday evening this week. Tom told how during the August Bank Holiday’s Storm Antoni, he was standing at his window watching the trees ‘almost bend in two’.
