Macra members, past and present, farming representatives, Dairygold personnel, along with local politicians, attended last Sunday’s unveiling of a plaque commemorating 100 years of Mitchelstown Macra (formerly Mitchelstown Young Farmers Club).

The location was close to Dairygold headquarters on Clonmel Road. The plaque sits over an existing sign, erected in 1975 on the occasion of Macra’s 75th anniversary.

MC for the occasion was Mitchelstown Macra chairman, Kevin Casey, who welcomed everyone. He said he was proud to continue what was a wonderful legacy of an organisation that had its origins in dark economic times. A bloody War of Independence followed by a bitter civil war, left the country in ruins. In spite of this, farmers and farming rallied and in 1925, inspired by co-operative principles, Mitchelstown Young Farmers Club was established.
