While there may be a perception that crime is on the rise in the Fermoy area, new figures released for the Garda sub-district show many incidences of crime have risen only slightly while others were below last year’s levels.
The figures were given to the Joint Policing Committee at their meeting last week. They showed that there were 24 incidents of property crime from December 2012 to the end of February this year, as compared to 22 for the same period last year. Crimes against the person remained the same, at nine.
There were 3 more burglaries in the three month period as compared to last year, up from 5 to 8, while theft from shops was down from 3 incidents during the same time last year to 2 this year. Thefts from vehicles were also down from 6 incidents from December-February last year to 3 this year as the message appears to have gotten through to people not to leave valuables in parked cars.
There was an increase though in theft of other property, rising from 6 in the period last year to 9 this year. Assaults causing harm were down from 3 to 2 in the comparable period while minor assaults rose from 6 to 7.
Criminal damage cases were also down, the number investigated fell from 14 to 12 in the three month timeframe. Public order offences saw a rise though, from 15 to 20. Drunkenness offences were down significantly – from 9 incidents recorded from December to February last year compared to 4 this year.
The biggest rise in figure was in the number of traffic collisions. 23 crashes were recorded from December 2011 to February 2012 while this year the figure for the same period was a whopping 38.
