Nine new probationer Gardaí have been allocated to Limerick City following the latest attestation ceremony held in Templemore. More than 200 probationer Gardaí were attested last Friday, with new members assigned to divisions spanning across the country.
Deputy Niall Collins has welcomed the allocation, saying the additional numbers will strengthen resources in Limerick City whilst also supporting policing across the wider country.
“This year, we have seen a surge of new Gardaí into Limerick, and the increased Garda presence and resources in our county are hugely welcome.
“The surge in numbers has allowed local Garda management to roll out high-visibility policing across the city and also redirect experienced Gardaí across our county stations to serve our rural communities.”
Deputy Collins also confirmed that the new Garda District Headquarters in Newcastle West remains on track, labelling it as ‘an enormous asset’ for policing in the local communities.
He articulated that ongoing recruitment efforts are beginning to show results, with the last 18 months seeing three recruitment campaigns and another class of over 200 Garda trainees due to start training in Templemore this week.
This year’s budget saw an allocation of €2.74 billion given to An Garda Síochána to support the continued recruitment of Garda members and staff.
As of July 2026, there are currently 14,733 sworn Gardaí nationwide, along with more than 4,000 Garda staff, reserves and trainees.
Elsewhere, seven probationer Gardaí have been allocated to Tipperary, two to Mallow, one to Midleton and eight to Waterford.
