The community of Cistercian Monks residing at Mount Melleray will be based, for an interim period, at Roscrea from January 26, 2025, vacating the Abbey at Mount Melleray.
Confirmation of this comes in a statement issued by Dom Rufus Pound OCSO, Superior ad nutum of the Cistercian Abbey of Our Lady of Silence.
Dom Pound said that the Order will be continuing their presence in Ireland into the future, but to achieve this, they must ‘regretfully’ consolidate in accordance with the restrictions in present resources.
“After much reflection and soul searching we as an Order have had to make some very difficult decisions with the aim of ensuring a future for Cistercian life in Ireland. We have been confronted with these difficult decisions as we address the reality of falling numbers and ageing communities …” he said.
