Mitchelstown man Gerald Daniels is in the running to clinch a spot in the semi-finals of RTÉ’s Today TV Home Cook 2026, with the public now being asked to cast their votes. Gerald, 50, has already filmed his segment for the competition in the RTÉ studios in Cork and is now waiting to see if he will successfully make it to the next stage.
A confident home cook, born and raised in South Africa, Gerald impressed with his signature dish, bunny chow, a traditional South African/Indian curry served in hollowed-out bread. He describes cooking as something fun, adventurous and affordable, saying it’s a goal of his to show aspiring cooks that good food doesn’t have to be complicated.
The public vote is now open and will remain so until 6pm on Tuesday, May 5th. Out of the eight contestants, four will then be announced to progress to the semi-finals on Wednesday, May 6th.
Videos of all contestants are available to watch on RTÉ Player’s YouTube channel and the RTÉ Today show’s Instagram and Facebook pages, where there will also be details on how to vote.
A more enhanced feature on Gerald, profiling his cooking background and his competition journey, will appear in next week’s print edition of The Avondhu.
