As Mitchelstown Leisure Centre approaches its third anniversary, over 500 members regularly avail of the facilities located at Brigown, with more and more people deciding that the Leisure Centre has something to offer them.
Due to its increasing popularity, the centre has increased its carpark capacity and has taken on additional qualified personnel in recent times, to deal with demand and to continue delivering the high standards of facilities, classes, programmes and services on offer.
Visitors from other towns, some much larger than Mitchelstown, have inquired as to how such a facility can be delivered in their communities, and particularly one that is owned by the community and operates on a not-for-profit business model.
According to Mitchelstown Leisure Centre (MLC) chairperson, Ben Lynch, that element is important. Nobody gets to share the success more than anybody else. The directors are all volunteers, so the benefits are spread throughout the community.
He pointed to the success of Mitchelstown’s Darkness Into Light event earlier this year, where the centre accommodated 2,000 participants without difficulty.
Speaking to The Avondhu, Mr Lynch said that the performance of the centre has exceeded all expectations.
