Last Thursday, Minister for Health Simon Harris TD, officially opened the Mallow Injury Unit located at Mallow General Hospital, one of 11 injury units now in place across the country.

The unit opened to the public in March 2013 and last year treated over 6,000 patients. Open seven days a week from 8am to 8pm, the unit can treat adults and children aged five and over.

Staffed by consultant-led teams of doctors, nurses, radiographers and physiotherapists, the unit is designed and equipped for the treatment of patients with injuries such as broken bones, dislocations, sprains, strains, wounds, scalds and minor burns – injuries that are unlikely to need overnight admission to hospital.

Patients can go directly to the unit or can be referred by a GP. Staff members can perform and read x-rays, reduce joint dislocations, apply plaster casts and treat wounds by stitches or other means.
