Locals compete against world’s top athletes in Paris

Alison Bergin is set to compete in the Women’s Double Sculls B final this Thursday, August 1 at the Paris Olympics, alongside Zoe Hyde who is a member of Killorglin Rowing Club.

In their first heat, the duo placed third, advancing them to the semi-final where they raced from Lane 5 facing off against the Netherlands, Czech Republic, New Zealand, France and Italy. The Kildinan native and her boat-mate put in a stellar performance on what was their debut performance at the Olympics, with the duo finishing fifth place in Tuesday’s semi-final in a time of 6.55.08, heir performance described as‘commendable’ against a highly competitive field.

“We’ve been preparing for a long time for this and we were just taking every race as it comes, so yeah we’re disappointed, but we’ll just look forward to the next race now. We’ll re-assess later, sit down and look at the race and make a new strategy for the next day,” Alison said following the semi-final.
