While Cork County Council are actively seeking funding nationally for the major refurbishment of Fermoy weir, Watergrasshill man Barry Curtin, feels that the immediate plight of the salmon trying to get to their spawning ground is being forgotten about.

“We are interrupting the natural cycle of the salmon that come back to spawn in the exact same river where they were born themselves,” Mr Curtin told The Avondhu.

Mr Curtin has done quite an amount of research and feels that there is a very simple solution which would allow the salmon to make their way up the weir at the breaches by the Garda barracks.
