Local heroes bring home titles from national, international and world championships

All four were lauded for their outstanding achievements this week, bringing honour and glory to their home town and area.

It was a weekend of unparalleled success for the area as members of local sporting and karate clubs went out to compete on the national, international and world championship stage and came home winners.

Fermoy man Noel O'Callaghan, a member of Fermoy Racquetball Club, lifted the international title in the men's singles at the International Racquetball Championships in Italy; Brian Toomey and Martin Sheehan from Fer,oy and Kildorrery Karate Club s respectively, beat off stiff competition in the open world karate championships in Bulgaria - Martin to take the world heavyweight and grand champion titles and Brian emerging victorious in the over 40s category.

Also over the weekend, promising young rower Hilary Shinnick from Fermoy made it three in a row with her third consecutive win of the junior single sculls title at the Irish Rowing Championships in Skibbereen.

All four were lauded for their outstanding achievements this week, bringing honour and glory to their home town and area. "It's something we excel at," mayor Olive Corcoran said of the town's sporting prowess. "Champions all," she declared the weekend winners saying: "they've done us proud. It's a great good-news story and very welcome."
