The Bord Gais Energy Cork City Marathon takes place on Bank Holiday Monday, June 3. For a large group of locals it's D-Day as they attempt to successfully negotiate the 26 miles route.

With participants preparing to push their bodies to the limits of human endurance there's the consolation of knowing their exertions will benefit some very good causes.

Members of the learning support group, FACE, have signed up Michael Ennis, Darragh Wiley and Des White for the full marathon with Emily Bolton, Yvonne Seymour, Olga Smyth, Mariska Smit and Pat Canning set to complete the course as a relay team.

FACE are delighted to have secured two main sponsors for the marathon, namely: Avondhu Motor Factors and Allan Cuthbert (Special Needs Financial Planner). This sponsorship is much appreciated.

Meanwhile it's also all systems go at Fittstop in Fermoy where personal trainers, Sylvia Flynn and Valerie McCormack are overseeing the training of 52 marathon candidates. The group have been in training for the last 12 weeks and according to Sylvia and Valerie are ready for the physical and mental challenges that lay ahead - as well as benefiting FACE, the Fittstop group are also supporting the Fermoy based Blackwater Search & Rescue Unit. Best of luck to all concerned.
