Kilworth set for QuadraQuiz Challenge

Kilworth is set for a brand new community event at the end of October when an innovative and new table quiz format will be held in the village. Entitled the ‘Kilworth Village QuadraQuiz – the biggest pub quiz ever’ the event will take place on Friday, 21 October and will feature a testing, but fun set of quiz questions for those entering. The format will see the quiz being run simultaneously in all four of the village’s pubs.

This promises to be a fun and challenging event. Teams will comprise of four members and will be competing against other teams in the same pub location – and against teams located in the other three pubs. They will all be vying for the right to be crowned the inaugural QuadraQuiz champions.

The event is being held to raise funds for the Kilworth Celtic Pitch Development Fund. Work is now well underway on the club’s new grounds, Sheila Flynn Park, and while matters proceed on this development the club’s fundraising committee are planning a series of events and initiatives to raise the much needed finance for the development – the first of these will be the Kilworth Village QuadraQuiz Challenge. Your support for this event would be greatly appreciated.

So put the date in the diary – Friday, 20th October for the ‘Kilworth Village QuadraQuiz Challenge’. It promises to be a night to remember for all involved. More details to follow in the coming weeks.

U12

Kilworth Celtic 1 Mogeely 0

Kilworth Celtic U12 Tigers had their second home game of the season on Saturday last, 1st October in Pound Lane and came away with a hard earned 1-0 victory against Mogeely.

The physically stronger Mogeely side set their stall out early that they were not going to be broken down easily and that’s the way the game unfolded, with the Tigers finding it tough going on the day. The strong breeze across the field in the first half made conditions difficult and the game was deadlocked at half-time 0-0, with both teams finding it hard to break one another down.

Management stressed at half-time the need for everyone to up their game in the second half in order to get 3 points. The Tigers made the breakthrough when following a move involving Charlie (in his new winger role) and Brian, combined to get the ball to Patrick’s feet and the top scorer in the league made no mistake with a finish low to the bottom corner.

Mogeely upped their game for the remainder of the half in search of the equaliser but our defense stood tall to withstand the onslaught from Mogeely and held on for a 1-0 win. Sean Og made some vital interceptions near the end, coming off his line well and making top class saves as well, his third clean sheet so far this season. It’s only a matter of time before he will be challenging for Tucky’s jersey on the junior team!

Overall, an excellent victory for the Tigers, while not at their best they held on for a victory which shows what good character this team is made of.

Team and scorers: Sean Og Kenneally, Charlie O’Meara, Shane Coughlan, Daniel Ryan, Oisin Hogan, Pierce O’Riordan, Brian Dunne, Patrick Kenny (1), Aoibhe Carey, Gearoid Carey, Liam Og Hegarty, Finnán Tobin Allen,  Jas Stankiewicz.

U16

Cetic U16s were defeated in their opening league encounter by Valley Rangers, who were fully deserving of the 3pts in Pound Lane on Sunday evening last.

Celtic started minus the injured Johnny Tobin Allen, but given the talent available at this age group, Johnny's absence should have been irrelevant. Not to be however, as Celtic looked rusty, unsure and nervous on the ball at all times. Despite starting brightly with Brian Casey holding the ball up well and Paul Hynes and Mikey Gowen the only two players who were controlled in possession, it was Valley who unlocked the Celtic defence with their first attack when Jack Casey was caught ball watching and the slide rule pass from the Valley midfielder was dispatched perfectly by the Valley attacker beyond Wheeler in goal.

Celtic applied some pressure from the restart but were again found wanting on the left side of defence when the cross from the Valley winger was powered home by their attacker with no challenge to show by the Celtic defensive unit.

Two down and the writing was on the wall. Celtic created numerous chances but the lack of a killer instinct in front of goal was obvious. Changes at half-time were needed and Celtic decided to change formation and switch to a 3-4-3 set-up with Leo Coffey and Oisin McSweeney introduced for Eoin Griffin and Sean Hegarty. Initially this ploy looked to be paying dividends with Leo and Oisin causing problems for the Valley back line, but again despite some good opportunities in front of goal Celtic could not find the net.

Valley netted a third with 20mins to play when Wheeler in goal touched a long range effort on to the crossbar only for the inrushing attacker to bundle over the line with no Celtic defender in site!

Celtic piled forward and pulled one back shortly after with Jack Casey finding the net when a cross come shot deceived the Valley ‘keeper. In truth the goal was more to do with Valley taking their foot off the pedal than it was with Celtic playing well and shortly afterwards, the game was put to bed when the Valley midfielder beat Wheeler with a long range effort from 30 yards.

Jamie Slattery and Killian Heggtveit were introduced to freshen things up but this was a day to forget for Celtic as they were found wanting in so many areas. They managed to pull a second goal back with the last kick of the game when Leo Coffey found the net, but overall a really poor performance from the defending league champions.

Much to ponder for Kevin and Fin who were mystified by the utterly abject performance of the team on the day after the good build up in training promised much more. Celtic players were off the pace in most areas and played as individuals as opposed to a team, which was the disappointing factor of the day. Only Dean Jordan, Paul Hynes and Mikey Gowen played to the level expected and a huge upturn in performance levels are required when the next game comes about if the lads are to challenge this season.

Team: Wheeler, Johnson, Jordan, Coughlan, Aherne, Hegarty, Casey, Gowen, Hynes, Casey, Griffin, Coffey, McSweeney, Slattery, Heggtveit.
